The surge suppressor protects against power surges in the line voltage which might otherwise damage the computer. It is placed between the wall socket and the computer's power supply. Often, the surge suppressor is combined with a power strip, which is a series of plug inlets along a narrow bar. This allows several devices to be plugged into the surge protected line.
